Shooting Roots is the part of Towersey Festival dedicated to young people.
Our job is to make an ace young space, where you can meet other young people, learn some great stuff, and generally have fun! Shooting Roots is a magic world where anything can happen, and for many of our participants it’s the best bit of the Festival. All our workshops happen in The Hive, our very own workshop space.
Workshop-wise we’ve got something for you whether you’re exploring the festival for the first time or an old hand who’s hoping to scale the peaks. All our workshop participants have the opportunity to take part in our last day showcase, a sure-fire spectacular! So, bring your enthusiasm, excitement and energy, your wit, wherewithal and wonderment and come share the glorious experience of creating part of Towersey Festival.
And in 2013....
Jack Returns - Not so long ago, on Towersey's own soil, the great villain Jack was put to death for a litany of crimes. But since that day things have taken a strange and sinister turn. War has broken out as progress battles tradition, leaving a blighted land and broken homes. And on the eve of the Morris War's final battle, four strangers play cards and share rumours of the fiend - Jack - resurrected...
Another dazzling, inventive showcase from the minds of Towersey's youth! Combining the results of all our workshops over the festival into a tale of, redemption vs. revenger, hope vs. despair and old vs. new
Music: Bring along an instrument or two and get involved in some big-band arrangements! We'll teach some traditional folk tunes and help you inject a touch of modern funk into them! All abilities welcome.
Theatre: Learn storytelling skills and ensemble theatre techniques as we devise from scratch a collection of stories, skits and scenes from the Morris War
Ceilidh Project: Funky World Band not enough music for one festival? Get stuck into the ceilidh project as well! If you can't play an instrument (Or just fancy a change) then have a go at ceilidh calling as well!
Song: The Shooting Roots Song Team returns to teach wistful harmonies and rambunctious work songs in possibly the loveliest workshop you could find this summer!
Morris: Delightfully dainty hankies meet cacophonously clashing sticks! We'll teach a number of dances from all over the Morris landscape, with our supremely skilled musicians and singers for accompaniment.
Rapper: Silver Flame Rapper are with us for another year! They're bringing a veritable arsenal of swords and a cabal of great musicians so all you need are some feet and some hands to learn this dazzling traditional dance! (Note: SRoots will not be held accountable for the loss of any hands/feet during Rapper workshops)
Craft: Have a crack at building and mastering a puppet! We at SRootsHQ got bored of craft workshops building cardboard sets-and-props for the showcases so we decided to let them do their own thing. And their own thing turned out to be puppetry workshops.
